More than likely, you’ve heard about the importance of staying hydrated when you exercise, even if you’re just getting into fitness. If you’re a serious bodybuilder or athlete, proper hydration is undoubtedly a crucial part of your overall training approach. If it isn’t, it needs to be, and there’s more to it than a bottle of some sugar-overloaded “sports drink.”
If you’re talking about hydration, you’re talking about electrolytes. There are several reasons why electrolytes are important, but first, let’s define what they are: electrolytes are the minerals sodium, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. These minerals have an electrical charge as well as play a primary role in maintaining the body’s fluid balance. They are essential for proper hydration, maintaining the acid-base (or pH) balance of your body, transporting nutrients to the cells of your body, and ensuring the proper function of your muscles, brain, heart, and nerves.
Watch Out for Cramps
They’re especially important during exercise because they can be easily lost as you sweat, leading to dehydration and such unpleasant effects as muscle cramps. If you ignore the body’s need for electrolytes for too long while you train, you will not only experience muscle cramps; you’ll also experience fatigue, muscle weakness, tingling sensations, and mental confusion–that doesn’t sound like a great workout experience to me!
If you’re working out for less than an hour, electrolyte losses are minimal, and water should keep you properly hydrated.
However, you need to replace electrolytes if you exercise for an hour or longer or engage in multiple training sessions per day if you live in a hot climate or train in hot conditions, such as outside on a hot day or in a room with poor circulation. Many sports require training outside in hot conditions, and many of these sports demand multiple sessions a day, which dramatically increases your need for proper hydration. Even if you’re new to exercise, you may find yourself performing your workout in a hot environment that can quickly lead to a state of dehydration.
While you can get electrolytes from food sources, you will perform better if you consume a drink before and during your training session that contains electrolytes, such as Ignite Nutrition’s Amino-Up. You should already know that Amino-Up will help keep you in an anabolic state, prevent catabolism, and support recovery, but you may not have known that it will help you stay hydrated even under the most extreme training conditions.
