You can find 43.5 million posts on Instagram that use the hashtag #cleaneating. So what’s all the hype about? Clean eating means different things to different people, but typically a clean diet consists of foods that are the closest to their natural state a.k.a. whole foods. At Vega, we define clean eating as choosing foods that are Non-GMO Project Verified, gluten-free, vegan, and made without artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners.

Think about eating like our ancestors did. Try to avoid anything that your great grandma wouldn’t have recognized. I’m talking about artificial colors, sweeteners, and preservatives. Try and aim for ingredient lists that include recognizable foods. Can you pronounce every item in your ingredient list? And if you are really keen to clean up your diet, try to eat pre-packaged foods with 5 ingredients or less.

5 Clean Eating Tips

Choose foods that are as close to their natural form as possible. A good rule of thumb is to opt for foods that don’t have a label (such as fruits, veggies, and whole grains). Not only are they nutrient-dense but don’t contain preservatives, artificial colors, or sweeteners.

Fruit and veggies are packed with nutrients and fiber, which can help you feel full longer and keep you crushing your nutrition goals.

Stay hydrated! Are you actually hungry or are you just thirsty? Water infused with fresh fruit or unsweetened green tea are both great ways to make your glass of water more exciting and add some extra nutrients.

Rethink happy hour. Get creative with your mocktails to help keep you hydrated and on track. Check out one of our favorites: Grapefruit Sage Mocktail.

Sticking with whole foods is your best bet. If you find yourself in a situation where packaged food is inevitable make sure it’s free of artificial colors, flavors, and other ingredients whose name you can’t pronounce.

Another great tip for success is to start low and go slow. If clean eating is new to you, try starting with 1 or 2 of these tips and build from there. Preparation is key, and if you’re stocking your fridge and pantry up with whole nutrient-dense foods then you can’t go wrong. Meal prep like a pro. And fear not, eating clean doesn’t prevent you from dessert!
